Since 2001, the theme of HEMUS has been "Defence, Counter-Terrorism, Security" and continues to this day. The international trade exhibition for defence equipment, counter-terrorism and security "HEMUS" is held every two years in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The previous edition of HEMUS attracted 157 exhibitors and VIP delegations from 50 countries, with impressive pavilions from the United States, France, Germany, Israel and South Korea. Bulgaria is a member of NATO and the European Union, and joined the Schengen Area in 2025. Trade between China and Bulgaria has developed rapidly, with bilateral trade volume reaching 4.22 billion US dollars in 2023. China has become Bulgaria's third largest trading partner outside the EU and the second largest export destination. Bulgaria is an important node of the Belt and Road Initiative in the Balkans. Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria and an important industrial, commercial, scientific, cultural and transportation hub in the Balkans.
